Timiş2 - than 530 copies of one complete series of Romanian widebody streetcars is known, colloquially referred to often Timiş Timiş trains or cars. They were produced in both standard-and in one-meter run. Each train consists of a four-axle motor coaches and a four-axis side-car, the vehicles were in the years 1969 to 1990 produced in the Banat in Timisoara.

After the Romanian revolution in 1989 and the ensuing economic upheaval ELTIM graduated in 1990 due to economic problems, the production of railway vehicles, the company itself, however, still exists. They come mainly from Germany, some from Switzerland, Austria and the Netherlands. Many vehicles of the type Timiş2 achieved so that only a comparatively short life, in particular: the last-produced lines which emerged in the second half of the 1980s.

In scheduled passenger service with trains coming Timiş2 today only in Cluj-Napoca is used, which were then used vehicles modernized to some extent. In all other companies they were parked and scrapped, but occasionally still used today as a working and special vehicles. Timiş2 characteristic of the series was the consistently high level of harmful crop and the lack of supply of spare parts by the manufacturer. These effects have been compounded by the very high loading of the vehicles during the energy crisis in Romania the 1980s and the lack of experience of the workshops in the also newly opened establishments in this phase tram.

Tradition of the tram vehicle manufacturing in TimisoaraEdit

Already in 1914 (then Timişoara still belonged to Austria-Hungary), the local transport companies began to produce trams on their own. Initially created in this way only the three sidecars 01 until 03, in 1921 with the Type D then the first time multiple units () under supply of electrical equipment. Emerged from 1950 in Timisoara modeled after the Swiss standard car, the first modern four-axle dump cars in Romania (Type GB-2 / 2) of this series were produced from 1950 to 1954 a total of only seven vehicles.

Starting in 1958, focus was then on the reconstruction of older two-axle vehicle with wooden superstructures, which were fitted with new steel structures. The last reconstructed in this way cars created during the years 1962 to 1964, this type was called Timiş1. Thus we first took the opportunity with the type designation on the production location of the vehicles to draw attention to. Banat is Timis River (German title: is Timis), meant in this case, however, named after the river Timiş County (whose capital is Timişoara).

Allen produced until 1964 in Timisoara tram cars have in common is that they were formed only in small batches and usually prepared over several years. The production of larger quantities would be in the cramped workshops of the tram depot at strada Take Ionescu (factory town in the district) was not logistically possible, especially because the production parallel to the regular maintenance and driving occurred. Only with the new type Timiş2 industrial mass production began, with Reko Timiş1 car of the predecessor series, the new car, however, had other than the production site and the type designation not common.

The main reason for the construction of a separate tram type in Timisoara was the then-strong aging fleet of local transport companies. It dominated the time was mainly pre-war two-axle vehicles, they were the new importance of the tram as a mass transport at that time was a thriving metropolis no longer just. Also crucial were the sometimes very narrow radii in Timisoara tram network, which would not have been suitable for all the time on the tram car commercially available types. This requirement is reflected in the relatively short and narrow construction of the Timiş2 cars.

Start of production Timiş2Edit

In 1969, the construction and delivery of Timiş2 prototype (holding number 231) which took place - as was all in Timisoara has built vehicles - also still in the workshops of depot 1 at the strada Take Ionescu. The series should be done at a new location on the southern edge of town, there came into being on Bulevardul Dambovita addition to the new production facilities, a second car with a large hall Abstellgelände. Officially started the serial production of Timiş2 trains for Timişoara then in 1972, this year was also the vehicle manufacture and the tram operator organizationally separated. However, the further production was very slow at first, two-digit numbers were not achieved in the early years.

The series of TimisoaraEdit

Nearly one quarter of the total of 530 trains went to Timisoara itself, were a total of 129 local transportation Timiş2 trains produced. Modifications over the yearsEdit

Also very characteristic of the Timiş2 trains was the fact that they have been produced over the relatively long production period of 21 years, virtually unchanged (and therefore technically, particularly in the 1980s, times were already obsolete). Modifications were only on certain details which are listed below (different model names were not used for the different versions, however):

  • (The first trains built until at least the train had only 234-4 on the window side hung windows, but does not) on the door side (to avoid drafts. In the later-built trains were then fitted on either side hung windows.
  • The first 14 Timiş2 trains (13 of them for himself and one for Timisoara Oradea) were equipped with an electric equipment of German company Kiepe Elektrik from Dusseldorf. Beginning of 1974 ELTIM this joint venture announced, however, already up and put down the 15th produced train (244-14 for Timişoara) to the local electrical system.
  • First Timiş2 trains were in the two-seat fitted (back and seat separately). After about five years (presumably from train 261-31, built in 1975) were built in the Timiş trains then instead of the two-seat, however, a piece consisting of a plastic bucket seats.

  • From 1979 the trains were given instead of the previous small line number display (which was placed on the vehicle body), a new broad line number display which was integrated above the cab of the truck box.   • Starting in 1982 or 1983, instead of the previously used built-hung windows (which in the upper window area could be tilted) sliding window (which in the upper half of the window could be pushed to the side).
